A 175 ton sculpture in Atlanta (that cost a million dollars, no less), built to remind future generations of just how fragile the Earth is, has done just that. Well, except for the fact that it lasted about three months from the time it was originally unveiled, so perhaps it didn’t quite last as long as intended. Your children and mine may not actually be able to see the sculpture, so they might not get the message after all.
Apparently lying in the remnants of the globe was the phrase “our fragile craft” (which would seem to indicate that we are living in a fragile world, which is our transport through this life), somewhat ironic considering the outcome of the piece.
The massive globe would seem to have been made up of a number of pieces, lying scattered about the grounds like one of those puzzles you find when challenged to put together the various pieces into a certain shape within a predefined limit. No one was hurt when the collapsed artwork decided to give way. The artist has vowed to restore the artwork to its former glory, starting as soon as next month.
I hope he uses stronger structural work next time.
