VLC Media Player

VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a pretty full-featured media client that offers a ton of features, including one really useful one: Being able to play protected AAC files without the need for iTunes. Yes, you have to have your keys, but you don’t have to have iTunes. Find your iTunes keys, copy them to your computer, and the content plays. As simple as that. Is it perfect? No, it doesn’t seem to be perfect. But it’s a start.

Update: It doesn’t seem to work on songs purchased with iTunes 6. Sorry, didn’t mean to give you false hopes.

iTunes will only run on a Mac or Windows 2000 or XP.

What if you have a Linux PC, or a NetBSD PC, or you like Windows 98 ?

VLC will allow you to play your iTunes songs ( which you paid for ) on anything that you like. Shame it doesn’t seem to work with iTunes 6 songs.

Mostly becuse iTunes is a bit of a resource hog. To be fair, VLC isn’t a lot better, but it is a bit nicer. It’s just an option.

Frankly, my big concern is that I don’t like having to have to use iTunes. It’s not that I don’t like it as much as that I like to have alternatives if I choose to do so.

Why would you not want to use iTunes?
