Last night marked the third time that we visited the Off Tryon Theatre Company (OTTC). The show this time was Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love. Quite a lengthy (and odd) title, to be sure, but don’t judge the performance on title alone!
While each one of the performers was on-stage for the whole night, there were primarily two title roles. Candy was played by Amanda Liles, who we saw previously in Boy Gets Girl. Her role here was much larger and allowed Ms. Liles to really show her range. She did very well.
The role of David was played by Glenn T. Griffin, and he nailed it as well. Mr. Griffin kept bugging me as a familiar face, but I still haven’t been able to place him. I can only assume that it’s his role as Artistic Director of OTTC, and I’ve simply seen him around the theatre during other shows.
Raquel Espinel played the vamp, Benita, to the “T”. While the scenes that had her “reading” other cast members were a little supernatural for my taste, her storytelling skills were excellent.
The role of Bernie was ably filled by Tom Ollis, and Jerry was well done by Andrea King. The final roles of Kane and Robert were filled adequately by Bob Walker and Patrick Kirby, respectively. The small roles were done well enough, but we just didn’t feel the same range of emotion out of these two.
All in all, the show was a great one. The acting was superb and the storytelling was good. The only letdown of the night came from the story itself. While adventurous and even risky throughout, the ending was too Hollywood mainstream to hold up with the rest of the show. I think it’s safe to say that we’ll be back again, nonetheless.
