This weekend, we took a trip went to Buffalo, Toronto and Niagara Falls. Naturally, I’m sure you’re thinking we were absolutely nuts – and you’re probably right. This isn’t really the time of year to head North. But we purchased the tickets for just $100 round trip, and we were going to take it.
On Sunday, we took a trip to Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre to see Mamma Mia! For those who don’t know, this musical is built around songs from Abba – yes, that Abba.
Surprisingly (at least to me), the show was quite good. The instruments were perhaps a touch too loud, as often the vocals of the performers could not be heard, but this was a minor point. Throughout the show, the scenes were well-performed by this cast.
While the show seemed to last the typical two hours or so, the cast really moved this show along. There was simply no time to drag along. The opening scenes of the second act were certainly a bit slower than those in the first, but they served to establish necessary plot points, and the show fit together well.
I especially enjoyed the encore by the cast, where they sang a few songs after the story proper came to an end. Quite entertaining. Perhaps not as good as the group time warp at the end of the Rocky Horror Show, but a nice surprise nonetheless.
