Human Condition

This morning, I read about a kid who beat a puppy to death with a board. Why? He said that it felt good. It felt good? To beat a puppy? Until it died? Where do we find these people? I don’t care how much you dislike something – to beat it to death with a board simply because you don’t care for it is wrong. I don’t particularly care for cats, but I’m not going to beat one.

It’s one thing to say that the world is changing – to say that the yard sale just isn’t what it used to be because of the Antiques Roadshow. It’s one thing to say that our morals are slipping because everyone and their mother poses for Playboy. Wait a minute, Playboy now wants to hire some Wal-Mart employees, so perhaps I should include grandmothers in that list.

It’s one thing to say that you probably shouldn’t mess with the people in customs if you want to board your flight. It’s one thing to say that kids shouldn’t have oral sex with one another while on a field trip. (Thanks, Les).

Sure, in a perfect world, these things wouldn’t happen. But they are mostly harmless (with apologies to the late, great Douglas Adams). I don’t want to start a debate. That’s not the point. The point is that surely even the most devout person can understand the difference between some naked Wal-Mart greeters and a kid beating a puppy to death because it felt good.

True enough. But it doesn’t make it right. 🙂

This is nothing new, the world is not worse than in the good old days. In one of Mark Twain’s books some kids set a cat on fire with kerosene, just for fun. There have always been cruel and thoughtless people.
