Don't Back Down

Dilantin, 300mg, Day 3 »

I think I only slept about 6 hours last night, but I'm feeling good. I'm feeling almost completely rested. I still have a slight headache that just doesn't want to go away, but I think I can manage. It seems to continue to fade - hopefully it will be gone in sometime today or tomorrow. Just in time to have a day or two of feeling good before I drop another pill on Wednesday.

Dilantin, 300mg, Day 2 »

I went to bed about 9pm last night, slept for around 10 hours, and I'm still a bit drained. But I am feeling a ton better than I was yesterday. I'm hoping this means that all is good. Naturally I'll try and get another good night's sleep tonight, and nopefully that will put me back on an even keel. At least it's the weekend, so maybe I can get a bit of sleep before Monday rolls around.

Dilantin, 300mg, Day 1 »

I woke up about 1am with a splitting headache, perhaps because Percy (our second-youngest of the canine variety, and smallest at just six pounds) was shaking his head incessantly. So after a quick ear bath - his, not mine - and a nice cold rag - mine, not his - I went back to bed.

I made it safely until about 4am, when I started tossing and turning quite a bit, as the headache had returned, though not with quite the same strength as before. Unfortunately, my cold rag had turned somewhat luke warm. So I refreshed it, and tried again, only to get into some fitful dreams.

This itself is interesting, as I rarely dream - rather, I rarely dream so that I remember it. Yet over the last two weeks or so, I've had at least three instances where I've woken to be able to recall my dream. This is the only one that I can remember even now, several hours after I've been up and about.

So I'm wondering if the reduction in Dilantin is a: causing a headache somehow (this is the first time I've been below a daily dose of 400mg in quite some time) and b: leading to an increased recall of dream activity.

Because Dilantin (phenytoin, specifically, the generic name, and likely most drugs designed for seizure control) affects the neural activity, it wouldn't seem out of the realm of possibility that either is true.

Physically, I'm feeling pretty good, but I'm a bit woozy. I did some raking of mulch and some pruning of a rose bush - both highly unusual, but they needed to be done. That could certainly explain it as well. I'm going to get a bite to eat and see how that affects things. More later, if necessary.

Dilantin, 300mg »

Tonight's the night that drops my Dilantin dose by another pill, to 2 pills (200mg). Still taking 1 pill (100mg) in the morning. Just about three weeks to go.

Dilantin, 400mg »

Tonight the Zonegran dose will be at full-strength (400mg), so I am taking the first steps to reduce my Dilantin dosage. The first change is to take only one Dilantin pill (100mg) in the morning. I'll still take 3 pills (300mg) in the evening.

Dilantin, 500mg »

My current dosage of Dilantin is 500mg. I take 2 pills (200mg) in the morning and 3 pills (300mg) at night. Over the last few months, I've developed a bit of a general 'medicine head' or 'dizzy feeling' that, along with an increasing occurrence of seizures after a prolonged period without them, is prompting me to switch medicines.
