2008 Mustaches for Kids: Checkpoint 3 »

The growing is now three-quarters of the way along, and this time I'm not quite so late to the checkpoint. I'm still running a bit late, because my camera is still wanting to act up a bit more than it should, but it's not as bad as it was at Checkpoint 2. In any case, there's only one week left (I'm sure that everyone is glad to hear that!), and this mustache is really starting to get going.

Whether you are growing yourself, or just sitting on the sidelines, Mustaches for Kids is working for a good cause. The donations that they raise go towards all sorts of programs, and perhaps most importantly, you have a choice in which ones get funded. The longer you wait, the less choice you will have, as that's just the way that these things work. The page currently shows that 77% of funding has been received for this goal - $19,412 out of $25,000. In other words, there's plenty of donating left to go (and I'm sure they will accept donations after the goal is met), but the choices may be getting fewer and far between as we reach the finish line next week.

Yes, that really is my ugly mug over there, and that is really a mustache on my upper lip. As I've mentioned before, I've never really had a mustache previously, and it's not bad. I'm not sure if I'm a mustache guy or not. I feel like I ought to be trying out for a role in a bad porn film in the 70s or something, but other than that, it's not too bad. One advantage to the mustache over the beard is that it doesn't get as itchy after growing it out. A few days of chin-stubble and it just starts driving you crazy.

If you're one of those who doesn't like to grow anything at all, that's okay. You can still donate to the cause (hey - it's for the kids!), and you may want to read How to Shave Like Your Grandpa. I've never tried using a proper razor before - generally going with a trimmer or a disposable of some kind - but it seems like it may just be a reminder of a nicer time. Maybe I'll splurge when this is all over and give it a go. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for mentioning Art of Manliness! You should definitely splurge on a safety razor. It will change your life. Merkur makes a good one. You can get them on Amazon.com. Also, make sure to get your badger brush. My wife got mine at Crabtree. I think it cost $30, a little pricey, but it really helps with creating your lather. Good luck with your adventure in wet shaving. Email me if you have any questions.
