Garinger Wins Without Playing, Breaks Streak »
Earlier this week, the Garinger Wildcats broke their 51-game losing streak without playing a down. It seems that both North Mecklenburg and Vance, who the Wildcats played earlier this year, used ineligible players, which will cause them to forfeit their games. The Wildcats played North Meck on August 24, when they lost 41-0 and Vance on September 14, losing 49-0. While I'm sure that they are glad to see the streak end, I would have to imagine that it would be good to see a win on the field. Maybe next week (they lost to Hopewell 49-14 this week).
Meanwhile, the Big Three - Butler, Independence and West Charlotte - seem to be hitting their strides this week. The way that this season has gone thus far, it might only be for a week, but it is certainly better than nothing, as maybe the season has finally started in earnest for these teams.
Butler absolutely flattened Providence 62-6 with quarterback Jacob Charest throwing for 311 yards and four touchdowns as as the bulldogs cruised to an easy victory. With about a month to go before the rubber match with Independence, it's looking like Butler is on cruise control. Next week they play Myers Park.
Independence beat South Mecklenburg handily, 49-14 behind a monstrous 276-yard running performance from Rod Chisolm, who apparently had enough money in his pocket to offer a promise to his offensive line if he had a "big game". I don't know about kids these days - but I don't think I would have been able to take out five lineman for dinner. Congratulations to him, regardless. I hope he can afford it. After leading 35-7 at halftime, this one was never close, and it looks like the Patriots are regaining their momentum as well. They play Ardrey Kell next week, which shouldn't be much of a challenge, but Ardrey Kell has looked better in their sophomore season than they did last year in their first year, so who knows?
West Charlotte, meanwhile, beat up on North Mecklenburg 30-6. This was perhaps the closest of the games, where the Lions got off to a bit of a slow starts against North Meck, in what they hoped would be a bit of a better showing. They have already faced Butler and Independence, and play Robinson next week, but still, it was disheartening. We'll see what happens.
