Tamarind Review (New York, NY 10010) »
I should probably start by saying that I am not a fan of Indian food by any stretch of the imagination. It's not that I dislike it, it just doesn't seem to particularly agree with me, and I have never really developed any sort of affinity for it.
However, the group I was with decided to go there, and I wanted to participate with the group, so I went. I'm glad that I did, because the food was good - but my rating probably reflects my bias towards Indian food in general, and I likely can't speak directly towards the quality of the food, since I really can't tell you what I ate!
I will say that I didn't try the goat. I've had goat, and didn't care for it, so I didn't try it again. I don't usually like lamb, but I ate it, and I quite liked it. I also had some sort of chicken (in fact, we had several, but one stood out) that was very good.
The rice was good, and the vegetables were decent, but not stellar. I've had better bread before, but bread is bread, isn't it?
While the place was nice, and we actually had a private room all to ourselves, so the service was attentive, what really surprised me was that I couldn't seem to get a decent glass of water.
Now I understand that they charge $7 for a bottle of Voss, and so naturally they are going to want to keep pouring it. And I can even stand the distilled stuff if I have to, but I simply could not get the waiter to give me the distilled variety - he kept giving me the seltzer, which irritated me to no end.
When you have a check that averages, with tax and tip, somewhere around $90 per person, you'd think that they could get your water right.
