Don't Back Down

Albemarle Road Burger Brawl »

Several months ago, the Cook Out Restaurant on Albemarle Road (as well as several others in Charlotte) updated their signs to mention that they had been voted the favorite burger place in Greensboro (perhaps The Triad) for the last several years.

I can't say that I know the motivation behind this. Perhaps sales were down (though a recent comment on that entry says that they are opening 8 new stores in the next few months, so I can't imagine that sales are too bad. Maybe they just wanted a bump. I don't know.

But apparently it got under the skin of someone at the Wendy's next door, because shortly thereafter, they put up a new message on their sign that said something like "This isn't Greensboro, it's Charlotte, and we've been here for 20 years". I guess that told them.

Or perhaps it didn't. Because while the sign at Cook Out came down not long after, and they went back to typically advertising their typical "best deal in Charlotte" messages, the Wendy's hasn't really let up. At least, they haven't yet.

While I only drive down Albemarle Road once a week or so (to get groceries at Aldi), I still see a sign now and again that seems to be digging at the Cook Out next door. So you have to wonder what it is that is under the skin of the folks at Wendy's. Have they been losing business to Cook Out? Did they lose some employees? Do they just have nothing better to do?

Anyway, Denise believes that the employees at Cook Out must have some sort of artificial smell that they can release, because it often has a great aroma - perhaps it's some sort of smoke or something that they periodically dump so that it attracts people - but it does frequently smell great (and at other times it doesn't smell at all, which is what arouses suspicion).

So a few weeks ago, when the January weather was in the 70s, the Cook Out sign goes back on the offensive, and says that it's a great time to "cook... out" (get it?). Just about as quickly, the Wendy's sign comes back and tells you not to do it. What in the world is it with these two?

Update: Just this week, Cook Out put up a new message that says that they are into "good food" and that is all, while Wendy's went back to the "don't cook out" message. Geez...
