Khan's American Japanese Grill Review »

Another in a series of strip-mall restaurants that I seem to be visiting lately, this one also has something of a dual personality in that they can't seem to decide what they want to be. The name should be a giveaway, but I have to say that I was focused on something different to eat, and didn't pay much attention. I was wanting something Japanese, without wanting to go for a full-blown steakhouse, so I was hoping that this was going to fit the bill. It did, but it wasn't exactly what I expected, either.

The place is very casual. As in it doesn't get much more casual than this. It's about as close to a lunch counter as you can get these days. And it's absolutely nothing like a Japanese steakhouse except for the food that you get. That is pretty close in flavor. The food is actually quite good in that regard. The steak and shrimp is amazingly tender, and seasoned well.

They also advertise the "best spring rolls in town", and were it not Indian Trail, which isn't the largest town in the area, I'd probably argue. As it is, there may not be much competition, so they might be right. They are decent, but probably not worth trying.

Service is good, and they are friendly, but nothing over-the-top. You serve yourself drinks, and the cups are huge. You could perhaps drink for days with the large, so unless you just enjoy a massive soft drink, go with the small. The dinner portions are similar in size. We ate five meals off of the two that we ordered, so you can get your money's worth, which is good because they are a bit pricey.

I can't speak to the American side of things, because we didn't get anything. But another group was there eating sandwiches and the food looked good and the people seemed happy, so I would say that it seemed okay.

The one thing that was a bit odd is that on a Saturday night, the place was empty. There was us and this group eating sandwiches. There was just nobody. The pizza place down the row was packed. Maybe we'll have to try there soon.
