The Melting Pot Review »

The Melting Pot is almost too much to be described in words. Sure, it's a chain of restaurants, and yes, it is a fondue restaurant and yes, you probably have a fondue set that you received as a wedding present and haven't touched since, and yes, you do cook your own food (sort of) while you're there. But it's actually quite good - especially the cheese, a sort of appetizer where you get a bowl of gooey cheese with all manner of things to dip, and the chocolate, which is the same but with chocolate.

The downside is that it's a bit pricey, and as mentioned, you do a lot of the work yourself. The cheese and the chocolate are prepared for you - your server will melt the cheese and chocolate and then you simply dip what you like (the apples and bread are best in the cheese, while just about anything is good in the chocloate). The main course, however, is more of a cooking process, where you get raw meats and veggies and place them in the pot to cook.

The advantage is that it makes for a great romantic dinner for two - though you have to enjoy the one you're with - or it makes for a great party atmosphere as well, as six or eight people can sit around, sip some wine and have a blast while you talk. But make sure you allow plenty of time. Even two people who have been before and know what they want will take a good hour and a half. If you take your time and work your way through it, a three hour meal is not uncommon.
