RJ's Seashell Restaurant Review »
Folly Beach has grown a lot in the years since we used to get a beach house each summer. There used to be not so many choices. Now there are plenty, and I'm not sure that's a good thing. In any case, the inside of this place has a modern feel to it. The menu is nice. The food, however, is so-so.
If you order the shrimp platter, you may want to get the kid's version instead, if they let you. We had one adult-size and one kid-size. The only difference was slaw and hush puppies (on the adult version) and it was $11 more. The kid version came with (smaller) creek shrimp, but you got more of them, so it was about equal to what you'd get on the larger platter. Not worth $11.
A special of fish was okay, and the crab cakes had decent taste but they weren't crispy. That's not a bad thing, but it was unexpected, so make sure you're ready for it. The she-crab soup was also unusual, even though it tasted decent. It's not so much that the food was bad as that it wasn't "normal" (whatever that is), so it just wasn't what was expected.
