Cajun Queen Restaurant Review (Charlotte, NC 28204) »
Every once in a while we find ourselves hankering for some good old cajun food, and there just aren't too many places around Charlotte where you can find it. We've been to the Cajun Queen in Pineville before, and we've been very happy with the results there. So we figured we would visit their other location, as it's actually closer to home. We had the shrimp and grits and the chicken and crawfish, diane style, and we weren't unhappy with the results.
The shrimp came blackened, and they were quite tasty. The grits were a bit runnier than I like. I prefer the my grits, uh, gritty. I've even had grit "cakes" that work well. Soupy grits just don't do it for me. There was also a large piece of sausage that didn't taste bad, but just didn't fit together well. Then there was a splash of creole sauce of some sort that again wasn't bad, but it just didn't go together that well.
The diane was much better. The crawfish wasn't the best I have eaten, but they were okay. The chicken breasts were lovely - two large pieces, covered in mushrooms that had wonderful flavor. The only downside was the rice, which was just plain.
Had the prices been a bit cheaper it would have left a better taste. I'm not above paying a decent price for a meal, but when it's a good price, I expect a good meal. This just wasn't it. Add that to the rather loud jazz band and it just wasn't worth it. Perhaps if we were in another room or downstairs and could have enjoyed the band at a lower volume and relaxed a bit. I don't know. Everything just seemed off. Maybe on another night. Or maybe we'll just go back to Pineville next time.
