Don't Back Down

Penguin Drive-In Review »

The Penguin has been around for a while (since 1954), but it hasn't changed a whole lot. They now have a bar, and there are a few items on the menu that you probably couldn't have found back then, like a black bean burger and sweet potato fries, but the food is still awesome.

Homemade pimento cheese and fried pickles are unlikely to be found anywhere else in Charlotte, and the atmosphere is something you won't be able to match. Be prepared to spend a little while, because if you get there at the wrong time, you may have to wait for a table. If you have a small party, consider the bar as an option, as it may speed up your wait.

This place was fun, 10 minute wait,(I hear we were lucky) outstanding portions, excellent speciality items and great staff. Well worth trying for a fun meal.

Visited today 7/01/08 at around 2:45pm. My friend and I, both bikers at heart (been a while but we are shopping) and loving good food at a good price, really enjoyed the respite. We came to Charlotte to check out Harley and Honda dealers and decided to check out the Penguin.

We were not disappointed. The atmosphere was fantastic, the service non-stop and wonderful, the ambiance what we wanted and the food... GREAT!
My friend, Sam, had a full block (he could have eaten a full-hemi), an order of their great onion rings and a share of a 1/2 portion of fried pickles, chased by a nice draft beer (CHEAP)! I had a short block, onion rings and shared the fried pickles... chased with a Sprite (I was driving).

The food was great, the service was great (the servers constantly walk the room and ask if you need refills, anything else or whatever). The music was a cross between old rock, BeachBoys and alternative... great stuff!

We both left this place wishing Burlington, NC had one like it! Good stuff!
