Don't Back Down

Our Armor or No Armor »

In the latest twist of the Iraq saga, Army officials have apparently banned the use of any armor other than that issued by the military. That's just stupid.

I appreciate that you don't want someone to feel that they are safe when they are not. I appreciate that something defective may cause some sort of harm. But when you can't provide the armor, you can't tell them that they'll just have to do without.

Ibuprofen, 200mg »

I woke up this morning with a really bad headache, so I took a single pill, and that seemed to stem the pain. Still trying to keep medications to a minimum while I transition from Dilantin to Zonegran.

Dilantin, 100mg »

This morning I dropped another pill. Rather, I didn't drop another pill. So I'm now just taking a single 100mg pill at night. That means one week to go. Assuming no problems along the way. Thus far it's been fine, but I am feeling a bit lightheaded. No idea or explanation at this point. But no headaches either. We'll see what happens.

Ibuprofen, 600mg »

I woke up about 2:30 this morning and my head was just pounding. I've been trying not to take any other medications since I started on Zonegran, to try and keep things as clear-cut as possible, but at that time of morning, I just wanted it to stop. So I took something. I managed to get back to bed and sleep for another couple of hours.

When I could sleep no more, around 6:00am, I took another 200mg pill, and that carried me through lunch or thereabouts. Unfortunately I had no more easy access to the bottle or I likely would have taken even more - but I didn't, since the bag was overhead in a bin. I took one more 200mg pill before going to bed at about 11pm, for a total of 600mg during the day.

United vs. US Airways »

We took a whirlwind trip to Chicago over the weekend, stopping in for a few bites to eat, to take in a show and to visit the two of the three tallest buildings in the city. We made our plans last Wednesday, having planned well in advance to have a spontaneous trip over the weekend. Odd, I know, but we do what we can.

Downtown Dogs Review (Chicago, IL 60611) »

This is the type of place I like. A small, unobtrusive location that you're likely to miss unless you know just where you're going. A nice staff that seems to love what they do so much that they put everything they have into it. And a good price for what you get. In this case, the outlet is Downtown Dogs, a small eatery that you're likely to miss even if you know where you're going.

Tony n' Tina's Wedding Review »

Since we didn't make it out to any shows the night before, we decided to try and find something to do on our last night before heading home, and since we didn't want to stay out too late, we found the 5pm showing of Tony n' Tina's Wedding to be perfect for our needs. We showed up about 4:30pm, as instructed, and settled right in.

The cast of the show started filling the area not long after, with a photographer and videographer making the rounds, as well as various siblings and other wedding party members mingling with the growing crowd. Just before 5pm, we filed into the Chapel of Love for the ceremony itself, and witnessed the tying of the knot - for somewhere around the 3700th time (figuring 6 times per week for 12 years now).

Giordano's Review (Chicago, IL 60606) »

After we wandered much of the downtown area on Sunday, we needed a rest for something to eat, and stumbled across Giordano's World Famous Stuffed Pizza, just across from The Sears Tower.

One word of warning. Stuffed pizza takes a long time to cook, so make sure you have time to wait.

Corner Bakery Cafe Review (Chicago, IL 60601-1014) »

While wandering about the downtown area, we stopped to get some directions and happened to find ourselves in a restaurant of sorts. It was the first we had seen, but after we saw this one, we must have seen ten more.

I had never before heard of the Corner Bakery Cafe, but looking at their web site shows that they are a far-flung operation with outlets in California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Texas and Virginia (and I think Washington DC). That's an odd footprint, to be sure.

Al's Beef (and Nancy's Pizza) Review (Park Ridge, IL 60068) »

As if The Signature Room at the 95th didn't offer enough tongue-tying for the day, we decided to up the ante a little for dinner by visiting a small local place after we returned to our hotel.

The Signature Room at the 95th Review (Chicago, IL 60611) »

While its name doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, this dining room offers two distinct benefits. One is the view. From the 95th floor of the John Hancock Center in Chicago, there isn't much you can't see.

Two is the fact that by dining lunch here you get to take advantage of that view without having to pay for a ticket to the observatory, which is actually located one floor below the dining room.

The cost of the observatory ticket on our visit was $9, while the lunch buffet price at $18 includes not only the aforementioned elevator trip included, but a buffet to go along with the trip. Since you might be likely to spend a minimum of $9 each if you eat on the ground, at worst you're just paying for the trip and the meal at once. At best, you're getting the ride for free.
