Who reads archives? »
Seriously. I've had this little itch to reorganize things around here for a while, and once I get the server move completed, I think I probably will do so. One of the things on my mind is the archives. I know that I rarely read the archives of anyone else's site. So why do we have archives?
Perahaps I should rephrase that. I rarely read the archives of others by clicking on the March 2006 link, by checking out the About a Blog category, or even scrolling one-at-a-time through the individual pages. Now looking at the archives through Google-colored glasses? Absolutely.
And I think that's the answer. I doubt many people at all, on a percentage basis, use the archive links themselves. But the search engines do. They see all those links and go hog-wild, which in turn boosts the page in the results so you can find it when you search for it. But it means we have to figure out what to do with all those links that no one uses. Or give up some Google Love. Blech.

Maybe someday you can turn them into a book.

Actually, I'm probably the main user of my archives, when I'm trying to find something and I can't find the right keyword to search for.
I do seriously doubt that anyone else uses them.
