Don't Back Down

Singing the Server Blues »

For the last two days, the server has been up and down. This is variously reported as being a problem with one of my scripts (mtview.php, actually) or a cron job from an abusive user. So if you get an error, check back in a few minutes. The fine folks at Site5 seem to be tracking down the problem(s) - it just takes a bit to find them, it appears.

Dilantin, 500mg »

My current dosage of Dilantin is 500mg. I take 2 pills (200mg) in the morning and 3 pills (300mg) at night. Over the last few months, I've developed a bit of a general 'medicine head' or 'dizzy feeling' that, along with an increasing occurrence of seizures after a prolonged period without them, is prompting me to switch medicines.

Logitech MX 1000 Laser Mouse »

For the better part of a year, I've been using a Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer. I've been pretty happy with it, but in the last couple of weeks it's gone rather wonky. And I don't know what that word means, but it fits so I'm going to use it. Even with fresh batteries, it doesn't seem to be quite on, with jumpy tracking and even some missed clicks.

So I picked up a Logitech MX 1000 Laser Mouse. I was actually going to get a mouse of the wired variety, having had my fill of wireless for a while, but I figured what the heck and took the plunge to the Laser.

Thus far, it's taken a little getting used to the mouse, but overall it seems to be tighter than the MS mouse it's replacing. I think I'll keep it.

That's Just Stupid »

A 12-year old finds himself in trouble at school because he took some powdered sugar with him one day. He allegedly made a joke in the bathroom about it really being cocaine, then said "just kidding". Stupid? Sure. But come on people. He's twelve years old (from Digg, but I can't find the story).

To illustrate that such stupidity is not restricted to men, an Australian woman has apparently been arrested for asking for quiet in a theater. To clarify: She did touch the woman she was trying to quiet. But come on now. Leave your phone on, then have the audacity to not only answer it but have a conversation? You ought to be slapped, not gently touched on the arm. (via)

Changes are Afoot »

I made some small changes to the footer over the weekend. First, I dropped both the licensing link and the HTML and CSS validation links. Why? I don't know. Just figured they weren't of concern to too many people. In their place, I added my affiliate link to DNS Made Easy.

Do you use electric or gas for heat? »

People everywhere are up-in-arms about the cost of gas heat. Yes, even in relatively mild Charlotte. Stories about $70 bills inflating to $210, a $125-150 average jumping to over $600, cutting back to 65 degrees and still getting a bill for $163. Why is everyone so hooked on gas?

Let's Make Up Numbers »

Apparently there's a piracy boom in Latin America. Music and video media is ripped off and sold for prices way below what the giant media companies would give you. I'm not advocating piracy - I think if the companies provide us with the entertainment, they ought to reap the rewards. Too many people are digging that socialist vibe where big companies are evil. I don't.

Watching What You Say »

It really gets me when people say something - especially as a lead-in or a title of some kind - and then within the body of their message, that title gets contradicted.

Christian Throwback Jerseys »

Read an article in the paper this morning about Christian Throwback Jerseys, a company who provides sports jerseys, but instead of team names you get books of the bible. So look twice at that Michael Jordan 23 you see while you're out - it might say Psalm instead of Bulls.

Living, Shop, Work »

By all accounts, the building of combined commercial, residential and retail developments is taking off. Some argue that the problem from here is that these creations are built as commercial properties becuase of zoning regulations, which in turns pushes up the price of the residentail portion, perhaps to a level where it no longer makes economic sense.

That may be true, but to me it seems more like the people who think that someone will live in the place where they work is pretty unlikely. Sure, it's nice to be located near the grocery store or some other place where you shop - but it doesn't seem to me as if the people living there will also want to work there.

Database Backup with Transact-SQL »

I've recently installed the Microsoft Small Business Accounting package. I have to say I'm enjoying it and think I'll keep using it. Unfortunately, I didn't like the Business Contact Manager for Outlook, as though the two would supposedly talk to one another, I didn't think it integrated particularly well on either side.

In any case, the application makes use of MSDE for database storage. This is all fine and dandy but it doesn't really help with backing up data or anything of the like. So I had to go digging through pages to find some decent Transact-SQL references. This one is to back up a database from the command line.

Tivo Quality Assurance »

I really like my TiVo. And I don't know what you could do about this sort of thing. But it just makes you wonder.
