Don't Back Down

I Hate Phishing »

I admit it. I wasn't paying any attention, and while trying to figure out that invoice in my inbox, I clicked on the link from the email and logged into the service. My eyes didn't even notice the strange URL in the address bar until after I clicked the "submit" button. Whoops. Looks like someone went phishing and caught something. I hate it when I don't pay attention. Last time it happened I received the first speeding ticket (or ticket of any kind) that I had received in quite a while. This time I gave up my user name (not that that is difficult for anyone to guess) and password.

Luckily, I use different passwords on different web sites. So it wasn't as bad as it could have been. But I still needed to change my password on every site that was associated with this particular account. Talk about annoying. Even though it didn't take long to do, it it left me wondering - is there some sort of hidden frame or something tracking my keystrokes? No idea, and I didn't feel like looking. So I logged onto another computer, that hadn't opened this email or gone to this site, and changed my passwords again. Geez. I feel pretty confident that it should be okay at this point, but what a nuisance.

I'm generally pretty good at these things, but this particular one got me because it's somewhat possible for me to have an invoice on this account. I just couldn't remember having one. So logging in to check it seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to do. In this case, it was the perfectly stupid thing to do, but really only because I did it through the link in the email. Had I simply gone to the bookmark in my browser that takes me to this account login, I would have quicklky realized the problem. Note to self: Don't click on links in email to log into accounts. It may lead to trouble.
