Event Tracking with Eventful »

The Events and Venues Database (EVDB) has apparently changed names to Eventful (though the company name appears to remain EVDB). I'm always a proponent of the shorter name, so I can understand the name change, and it may do very well. While "EVDB" may have caught on eventually, it probably wouldn't have been universal, with some people complaining about the mouthful of the longer version.

The Bathroom Commode »

An oldie but a goodie. A genteel lady is going camping and wants to inquire about the toilet facilities. Being the genteel lady that she is, she decides that "Bathroom Commode" is an appropriate term of reference. But ever the lady, she improves even more, abbreviating it BC. Hilarity ensues.

Charlotte Observer Blogs »

Apparently the Charlotte Observer is embracing blogs. The new Inside the Panthers blog contains a handful of stories already, with a number of comments (including one from yours truly). I've only found one other one thus far, the Running Mate, which deals with local politics, and has been online for at least a couple of months. Anyone found any others?

Incidentally, they are run on TypePad.

I Want to Like Google Reader »

I just can't. Sure, the interface is pretty. The keyboard navigation is slick, but who really cares, since you'll end up grabbing the mouse on the next page anyway? I'm sure there are reasons to like the integration with Gmail and Blogger, but I don't use either.

Unfortunately, they missied on one important issue: It just takes so long to read!

Deleting Document from Printer »

I managed to get a document into a "stuck" state. The printer showed the document in the list, and it would show it as paused, as printing, as deleting. But it would never do anything. The solution? Restart the print spooler service. Worked like a champ.

Of course, now I have another document hung up, but I know how to deal with it. And then I can try to figure out the problem with this thing.

Really Digging Digg »

It's no secret that I'm not a huge fan of social networking. By that, I don't mean services such as LinkedIn, which I'm getting to enjoy, but the sites such as del.icio.us and flickr. Sure, they are neat, and I've played with them, but I don't really get them.

It isn't as if this is new. I've talked about it before (and before that and even before that).

Goowy for the Masses »

Not everyone has the joy of a Graphic User Interface, or GUI (pronounced "Gooey"). I understand that many of you may not care to have one. But now we can all have such an interface to call our very own, accessible from anywhere and everywhere. I'm not talking about the Google Desktop. You have to download that and install it when you want to have access. I'm talking an actual desktop that runs in a browser.

Introducing Goowy (via), which offers a sweet AJAX desktop containing a mail client (complete with @goowy.com address and POP3 polling of other accounts), calendar, contacts, games and widgets, perhaps the coolest piece of all. Check it out. Nothing like documents or the like at the moment, but I suspect that will be along shortly.

My First Boxing Match »

Denise and I went to the Cricket Arena Friday night for a boxing match. A series of them, actually, with the main event being Charlotte's own Calvin Brock taking on David Bostice (apparently from Phoenix, in case you were wondering) for the IBA Continental Heavyweight Championship.

First, some warm-up bouts. There were five of them. Three were billed as 8-round contests, one as 6 rounds and one as 4 rounds. Only the last two were correct. The 8-rounders were actually 6 rounds as well. Already I'm thinking that the printers did a horrible job. But I'm still keeping an open mind.

Success Spurs Motivation »

I'm constantly fighting the inability to keep track of anything. I've tried over and over to make use of the tools I have (such as Outlook) to keep track of things, but I always end up with fifty reminders and thus ignore them. Once you pass a certain number of entries in that little reminder box it just becomes useless.

So recently I've tried to become more efficient at marking things off the list. I've found that as I take the time to complete tasks and actually address reminders (instead of just letting them suffer through procrastination rot from disuse), I actually look at the list - mostly because it's a completely manageable 3-5 items most of the time, motivating me to do it more.

The disadvantage is that I now how to put everything into Outlook or I simply don't remember it. I've transferred that part of my brain to the computer. Yikes.
