Don't Back Down

Goowy for the Masses »

Not everyone has the joy of a Graphic User Interface, or GUI (pronounced "Gooey"). I understand that many of you may not care to have one. But now we can all have such an interface to call our very own, accessible from anywhere and everywhere. I'm not talking about the Google Desktop. You have to download that and install it when you want to have access. I'm talking an actual desktop that runs in a browser.

Introducing Goowy (via), which offers a sweet AJAX desktop containing a mail client (complete with @goowy.com address and POP3 polling of other accounts), calendar, contacts, games and widgets, perhaps the coolest piece of all. Check it out. Nothing like documents or the like at the moment, but I suspect that will be along shortly.

Really Digging Digg »

It's no secret that I'm not a huge fan of social networking. By that, I don't mean services such as LinkedIn, which I'm getting to enjoy, but the sites such as del.icio.us and flickr. Sure, they are neat, and I've played with them, but I don't really get them.

It isn't as if this is new. I've talked about it before (and before that and even before that).

Deleting Document from Printer »

I managed to get a document into a "stuck" state. The printer showed the document in the list, and it would show it as paused, as printing, as deleting. But it would never do anything. The solution? Restart the print spooler service. Worked like a champ.

Of course, now I have another document hung up, but I know how to deal with it. And then I can try to figure out the problem with this thing.

I Want to Like Google Reader »

I just can't. Sure, the interface is pretty. The keyboard navigation is slick, but who really cares, since you'll end up grabbing the mouse on the next page anyway? I'm sure there are reasons to like the integration with Gmail and Blogger, but I don't use either.

Unfortunately, they missied on one important issue: It just takes so long to read!

Charlotte Observer Blogs »

Apparently the Charlotte Observer is embracing blogs. The new Inside the Panthers blog contains a handful of stories already, with a number of comments (including one from yours truly). I've only found one other one thus far, the Running Mate, which deals with local politics, and has been online for at least a couple of months. Anyone found any others?

Incidentally, they are run on TypePad.
