Don't Back Down

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina »

Over the weekend we went to Myrtle Beach. Nice enough place, but I recall with some fondness the days of my youth going there and staying in the two or three story open motels with a swimming pool right there, seemingly inches from the main thoroughfare - Highway 17. While Highway 17 is still there, it's no longer the main drag, as it were. There are, it seems, dozens of them. There are high rises everywhere and perhaps even worse, people streaming here and there and everywhere, even in what is surely approaching the off-season.

Saturday morning we visited a restaurant that I'm going to say was called Hot Stack (perhaps The Hot Stack), but I wasn't able to find it online. If you're in the neighborhood - which may be tough, considering I don't know exactly where it was and can't find it online - check it out. Excellent breakfast, and you may guess, pancakes. Very friendly staff to boot.

Later that afternoon, we went to Medieval Times, and though expensive, it was a good meal and an entertaining show. The kids really enjoyed it. I went to a similar show at the Excalibur in Las Vegas a number of years ago, and I would have said it was operated by the same group, but I'm thinking now that it wasn't. Way too much extra stuff going on in Myrtle Beach, from pictures as you walk in to mindless trinkets for large prices and even a number of souvenir cups to remember your trip. Apparently molded plastic and flashing lights were popular back then.

Naturally, we played some miniature golf, and found our way to another place for breakfast, but none of that was particularly memorable. Not that there was anything wrong with them - I suspect you can find those just about anywhere along the Grand Strand, however, so I don't think you'll be missing anything by not knowing the names of the ones we visited.

You previous stays at Myrtle Beach, was that before or after the Lincoln presidency?

In your trips to MB, have you been through Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach? Or caught a concert at the House of Blues? My parents actually have a place in Ocean Creek Resort right across the street and if you're looking for a nice quiet place you should check out the pictures of their place. I don't know what they charge to rent it, but let me know if you're interested and I can find out.

Cory, thanks for the info about your parents' place.

Unfortunately, I don't actually like Myrtle Beach all that much. I so prefer someplace like Folly Beach near Charleston, or even Edisto Beach down the road a bit. Too many people in Myrtle.

But yes, I've been to Barefoot Landing (and Broadway, and...) many times. I must say that I've never caught a House of Blues concert, in Myrtle Beach, New Orleans or anywhere else.
