Rebates and Free-Falling Prices »
As I'm browsing the Tiger Direct catalog that came in the mail, a couple of things jump out at me. First, what seems like a good price on a computer system on the inside front cover. Just $299.99 after rebate. The small print? The rebate expires 5/31. I received the catalog in the mail yesterday. Oops. That ought to make it really difficult to get the rebate.
So as I'm reading along, I see a 30GB (EIDE) drive for just $44.99. Reasonable price, to be sure. I remember just about 9 years ago when I came to Charlotte that I rushed out on a Sunday morning to be first in line at CompUSA for their limited-stock blowout of 1GB drive that were just $100. Unbelievable how quickly these prices drop. Of course, 9 years is a long time. Funny, it doesn't seem that long ago.
Now it seems that you can even get a 1GB SD card for just $79.99. Wonder how long it will take before you can get a 30GB one for $35.99? That will be sweet. Carrying around flash memory like that is so much easier than lugging around a hard drive. And it's a lot easier to connect, too. I bought some 512MB mini-SD cards not too long ago, and they were about $50 each. Nice size, nice price - but man, I want some of these 1GB cards - maybe they'll come in a mini format soon!

A couple of weeks ago I received a flyer from our local Best Buy store and they had an 80GB EIDE HD for $19.95 after mail-in rebates.

I've use several Lexar USB JumpDrives. My first was a 128 meg (lost it somehow), then moved to 256 meg. I'm currently using two 1 gig jumpdrives and one 2 gig jumpdrive. (Two are for work, one is for personal use).
I'm able to keep all of the following on the jumpdrive with rooms to spare.
1. All of the websites I've designed (235 megs)
2. My Quicken data (abut 22 megs)
3. Genealogy data files (133 megs)
4. Palm Pilot date file (4 megs)
5. Assorted Photos (5 megs)
6. My novel writing software (18 megs)
7. Help files for work (1 meg)
8. WriterSubmission software and data (16 megs)
9. All of my writing files (25 megs)
10. Other misc assorted items.
I still have only filled up 1/2 of the gig drive.
