Traveler Digital Camera »
With all of Peter's talk about his digital cameras, I figured I'd throw my own hat into the ring.
A few weeks ago, I purchased a Traveler 6.31 Megapixel Digital Camera, from, of all places, Aldi. As mentioned in the comments, the camera appears to be a rebranded Vivitar Vivicam 4000.
Thus far, the camera has worked wonderfully. To start with, it came loaded with accessories - 2 Lithium Ion batteries and charger, a car adapter for charging on the go, a small carrying case with belt loop and plenty of cables for connecting your camera. The 128MB SD card was a bit small, but I have others (more on those another time).
The quality of the pictures has been solid, but I must admit that I haven't used it nearly as much as I should have. I'll try and put it through some paces one of these days.
As I understand it, this camera went for $269 over the Christmas holidays, and even at that price it would seem to be a pretty good deal. When I bought mine, they were apparently clearing them out, because it cost only $169, making it seem like a complete steal. I'm very happy with it thus far, but I'll keep you posted on that if it changes.
Update May 26, 2006: I encountered the "take a couple pictures and the battery dies" problem myself. Thus far, no resolution. It seems that I can take somewhere between two and five pictures and then the camera shuts down, despite the battery having a seemingly full charge.
Luckily the batteries used by the camera are fairly common, though somewhat less so in the US than in the UK. I have found them here (charger here if you need one).
Free shipping on orders over $50, though I'm not sure how long that offer lasts. I've used this site before, and their products seem to work just fine - or they have in the past, at any rate. Let me know your experience if you use them and I can update the information here. I haven't yet decided if I'll invest more money in this camera or get a new one.
Update August 8, 2006: I ended up purchasing two of the batteries and a new charger from Atbatt.com (as linked above). I used them somewhat extensively on a trip last week, and they worked wonderfully. I have tried charging the old batteries, and they still aren't working too well, but at least the camera is working again.
Update: Alas, the camera itself finally died, due to my own problems (I dropped it). For some reason, the camera works to some degree - it will go through menus and whatnot, but it won't actually go through with the taking of any pictures or anything. So I've moved on. I have another Traveler camera, and I'll post a review of it soon. It does not take these batteries, however, so if anyone needs any, contact me using the link below if you need some and make me a fair offer if you're interested.
Update: The camera and all accessories have been sold. Thanks!

Looks interesting. Google turns up a few people who have reviewed or discussed the Traveler, but no actual product info pages or manufacturer info. I'll be interested to see how a $169, 6.31 megapixel camera performs. :-)

I don't see it reviewed in Steve's Digicams, but he doesn't cover every camera. I think most cameras are pretty good. I'm simply amazed at how well my Canon PowerShot A60, (2MP) does. I've thought of upgrading, but I post almost all my photo's on the web anyway, so what's to be gained.
I'm finding the real trick is the software for manipulating the shot later and, of course, properly composing the shot to begin with.

It seems to be the same as the Vivitar Vivicam 4000. I saw the Vivicam 4000 at Sam's for $244 today, without as many accessories as my Traveler. The Traveler seems like a great value.

I too got one from Aldi (for £180 GBP). Amazing value, 3yr warranty and it works great. Manual states that using the LCD screen greatly reduces battery life but I have not quantified this yet.

Can anyone tell me how to keep the power switch on,on my Taveler? So far, I have changed the batteries, tried to follow the instructions but as my Dad used to say, you need to be a Philadelphia Lawyer to understand them!!! I have had some super photos but I have now passed it to the grandson and the power switch keeps shooting back to the off position. HELP PLEASE

Aldi has a Traveler Slimline X5 5.2 MPixel with 256MB card and docking station for $200 USD right now.
I dont see the manufacturers link in comment above. Can someone repost?

Click on the word "This". It's a link. As of a couple days ago, the site did not have the "new" camera.

I have the 6.31, it seems like an incredible deal for the price. I doesn't seem to take as good a quality pictures as the cannon elf, or some of the comparable models. However im not complaining considering the price and all that you get. Im looking forward to seeing the slimline.

What is the availability and cost of extra memory cards?
Posted by ron p | May 2, 2005 11:43 PM
Memory cards are just SD cards - I picked up some 512MB mini-SD cards (with adapters for regular-size slots) for $50 or so not long ago.

Can someone please rate the traveler digital camera on a scale of 1 to 10(highest)? Aldi have them on sale and I would like to purchase one. Thanks!

Just bought the Slimline x5 on Monday, and gave it a test run yesterday. First off, I have to say I am pretty impressive by this unit. Low price, lots of features. On top of that, the camera is quite ease of use.
Some of the neat features from the camera are:
1) 3 Color modes - Normal (color), B&W, and Sepia.
2) 3 Capture modes - Single, Continuous, and AEB (have not figured out what is the difference between this and Continuous mode).
3) Docking Station
4) 2.5" LCD screen
5) Embedded Quick View, and Slide Show options
There is one draw back that I see: because of the size of the unit and the LCD screen, it does not provide a traditional view finder window. So if the LCD goes bad, the unit is rendered useless.
Overall, I am happy with the unit and probably gives it a rating of 8 on a scale of 1-10.

Thank you I waited on this response so now I'm going shopping thank you again.

What is the likelihood of the LCD screen going bad?

Greetings, I am an employee with ALDI and I have never known ALDI to be such high quality, that is until a started working there. I was inquiring to how good this little camera that I just bought is and I found this message forum. It is the slim line and it does have a lot of features for an extremely cheap price and nobody has returned the similar 6.3 MP Traveler, which is a good sign! So far so good and I love the camera!!

I recently purchased the slimline and i love it. I work in a photo lab and have previously owned 3 other digital cameras...two fujis and a kodak. I had the fuji with the 10 optical zoom and took it to vegas and was dissapointed....wish I had had the slimline then....the pictures ive taken so far are great and I see alot of digital pictures everyday at work...thousands. This camera has lots of bang for the buck...nice and compact too and Ive never seen another brand offer you two batteries plus a 256 card for that price..amazing.
Posted by nlo | May 8, 2005 9:10 AM
I just purchased the Traveler Slimline X5 from ALDI for $199. This is a first time camera for a young adult and the quality and features were important. I am satisfied that the camera is simple to use and appears to be of good quality.
After a lot of searching, I found who makes the camera. It is the same a "Konica Minolta Dimage E50" Check out this site.

I purchased the slimline camera a week ago. I went to Aldi after work and was surprised that they still had some left...amazing price for what you get. My brother and daughter both purchased the 6.3 camera after Christmas. I really like that one then...this slimline one is smaller and I like it better. I have not been able to get it hooked in the docking station so I am not sure what that is all about. I just use the AC adapter and plug in the wall. We are going on a trip this year and it should fit in a fanny pack very nicely. I like what I see.
Posted by Colleen | May 9, 2005 10:17 PM
I purchased the Slimline X5 and what a great camera so far if I could just get my Windows XP PC to recognize the camera now. NO driver needed for XP and am using the docking station and without. Can someone help please?
Posted by Jason | May 18, 2005 10:26 PM
I took 25+ photos and 4 came out green. Any clue what caused this? The camera is new and the flash is working.
Posted by Brooke Witham | May 22, 2005 2:19 PM
To Jason:
Change your folder options to show all hidden files and folders
Plug in camera with black adapter via USB press power and select pc go to device manager select USB Controller doubleclick Unknown Device select Driver Tab uninstall unplug camera
-------------
then
-------------
go to c:\windows\inf
delete INFCACHE.1
empty recycle bin
-------------
restart computer
-------------
plug in camera with black adapter via usb press power and select pc
camera should show as removable media now
in my case this worked fine with the adapter, but not for the dockingstation. maybe mine is damaged or something, since it should work this way too.
if you have further questions, post them here!!

To everybody:
The Traveler Slimline X5 is originally a Rollei dp5200 camera.
Rollei is a traditional german company that has been around for decades.
Rollei has a brilliant reputation regarding anything that involves cameras.
Personally I am very surprised, that they sold this camera for that rediculous cheap price at Aldi.
here's the link to the original manufactor
Posted by David Mauer | May 25, 2005 9:28 AM
It is not true that the Slimline X5 is manufactured by Rollei.
Rollei, Aldi, Maginon, Minox etc. buy this camera from an OEM manufacturer in Taiwan: Premier Image Technology Corp.
The model number of the Slimline X5 is Premier DS 5341.
Premier's company profile says: "Established in 1983, Premier Image Technology Corp. (Premier) is now the leading digital still camera (DSC) manufacturer in Taiwan, as well as the biggest compact camera manufacturer in the world with more than 15% of global market share."
Posted by Chris R | May 27, 2005 11:19 AM
Thanks for that info!
Didn't know that rollei doesn't produce their own digital cameras, like they do with their other ones..

I use this camera extensively, almost every day for a variety of pictures. The only negative I have is that when using the camera to preview the pictures, if the resolution is high, it might take a few seconds for each picture to load. This camera is absolutely dynamite for the price. I am told this brand has been sold in Europe for years and has a solid history. I know it works great and the quality is superb. I do not know of any other brand one might purchase at this price for this quality of camera - 6.1 is considered high end. Do not be afraid to grab one.

I lost my usb cord and tried to replace it with one at radioshack. no luck. one fit in the slot but would not connect right or something any suggestions on where to find a new one? They don't offer them for sale on the manufacturer's website.

Traveler purchased through ALDI'S has given excellent performance and results. Use camera for work, taking over 50photos per day. Only issue encountered is the fact that the battery life has deminished to 10-15min. Looking for replacment battery if anyone knows where to purchase. Who would have thought, such a great value and product, at ALDI'S?!!

Solution to download problems with Windows XP:
Bought my camera recently, but had problems with the docking station and downloads to my computer. The helpline gave a hint that led me to try this: Instead of connecting direct to the USB ports on my computer, I connected through a cheap little laptop 4-port USB extension hub, and everything works perfectly every time. My guess is that the hub is USB 1.1 as it has no external power, but what the hell if it works. I get the standard error message telling me that the camera is a USB 2.0 high speed device in a USB 1.1 port, but I should care, and anyway there was no speed at all when it didn't work! Maybe even a USB extension cable will do the trick.

I have been thinking about buying one of these cameras also. I found out that they are made by a German company Supra Foto Electronics.
Posted by melissa | October 27, 2005 12:17 PM
As far as I can tell Aldi's is getting a real deal here. I am AMERICAN living in Germany. You think you got a deal. I have ALDI here too. They have a 8.1 Megapixal for 259.00 Euro's equal too about $300 US. (This is fully loaded too.)
I know that Germany is selling them. I am still trying to find out who makes them because they will still work on American computers. I am hoping that the instructions are in English also.

I too was intrigued by the Aldi Traveler digital camera. Aldi has the 5MP version on sale this week for $188. It seems like a sweet deal for the price and after searching for reviews of this camera, I came across this website in case anyone is interested.
If you scroll down, you will see the review for the Traveler Slimline X5 with docking station - which is a version of the Konica Minolta Dimage E50. I chose not to purchase this camera based on that review but still think it might be a deal for the price considering all that you get.

I just bought the X5 from Aldi last night for $188, now with a 256 XD card along with the other goodies. Seems like a great deal. However, the battery life (on first full charge, so may get better) is not too good. Also, the camera will occasionally turn the autoflash icon on the display red, at which time a picture can't be taken. Is this "normal"?
Posted by kmz | November 3, 2005 4:12 PM
My husband and I have had our Traveler DC 6300 (bought at Aldi also) for over a year now. It's been great! Love the video recording feature. Draw backs I have encountered so far are low battery life and my shutter button has moved off track some and won't always work. I'm in the process of trying to find more rechargable batteries. I was told from the hotline to go to www.star-battery.com but couldn't find what I wanted. That's how I came across this website...searching. Let me know if you find a place that sells them.
Posted by Judy | November 3, 2005 9:50 PM
Judy, do an internet search for Minolta Dimage E50, which is the same camera, you'll find replacement batteries for ~$22. can you answer my question above: When in auto-flash mode does the icon on the LCD sometimes briefly go red intermittently for no apparent reason? This means that the flash is charging and a picture can't be take at the time. My other digicam, a Panasonic, charges the flash at startup and when a picture is taken, but not randomly like this one.
Posted by kmz | November 4, 2005 10:28 AM
Judy, about post 48, sorry. I see you have the DC 6300, not the X5. If you can determine which "name brand" is the same camera, you can get the batteries same way i sugguested. I recall seeing the DC 6300 as a "name brand".
Posted by kmz | November 4, 2005 10:57 AM
Love the camera. Can't believe all the features this camara has for the price. I also only paid $169 for my over 6 mp camera!
No problems at all... but why worry... it comes with a 3 year manufact. warranty!

I purchased a replacement battery from a Battery Specialty Store for $59.00. The battery tag says it is for: CASIO, FUJIFILM, KODAK, PENTAX, PANASONIC, RICOH, TOSHIBA. and will replace: NP-60, NP-30, VW-VBA10, D-Li2, DB-40, PDR-BT3, KLIC-5000. The battery is a Li-ion 3.7 Volts 900mAh. I hope this will help you find a battery. This solved the problem of the camera shutting down after a few minutes.

Hi there....
I am very happy with my traveler camera. I have been missing the adapter ever since my birthday party in 2004. Finally this page has given me an idea where to get a new one. So thank you :-)
NB. I have been using a not suitable adapter since.

I've had the Traveler 6300 for almost 2 years now. I love it. The size of the camera easily slips into a pants pocket. The pictures are amazing and the zoom on extreme closeups really holds up well. I would love to buy another one for parents, friends etc. I purchased a 512 SD card for $20 onsale. This camera is worth the price especially for the 6.3 pixels.
I see that Aldi is selling a Traveler 8.1. Any reviews on this camera?

I have the Traveler Slimline 5.2 that came with all the bells & whistles. The one thing that I'm impressed with among many with this camera is the quality of video it takes. Batteries die very quickly, but perhaps I don't charge them fully. I used this camera at concerts and have gotten some great shots. Overall happy with the camera for what I paid ($200 at Aldi). You can get extra memory cards at Aldi (512 meg) for 19.99 at our local store.

Pauline, I have had problems with my Slimline X5 and returned it. In my box there is a card with a toll free service numer 800-270-5071.
So far I am not crazy about this camera. Purchased it Oct. 2005 at our Aldi store. We had problems downloading the pictures on the computer, quality was poor for a 5.2 mp etc.
I called in today and they promised to send me a new one next week. Hope this one will be a better one!

We are thinking about buying a Traveler 8.1 megapixel digital camera and kit from Aldis. Has anyone used this? What are your thoughts? Price is $229-3 yr warranty. What are the pros and cons? Thanks!
Posted by Belinda Peiffer | June 4, 2006 1:32 PM
I had a 6.3 mp but aldi then got in an 8.1 m.p.with a 2.5 screen, and a docking station. It's normal to turn off if you are not shooting. I have increased the time from 1 to 2 minutes before it turns off. I thought this was normal with all digital cameras.
Posted by Ruth Bennett | June 9, 2006 12:21 AM
I had this Traveler 6.31 for about two years. About a year ago the LCD screen froze up but Aldi's replaced the camera as part of 3 year warranty.
Now the camera appears to operate on a very slow shutter speed. It also appears that shutter is almost a second delayed once I press the button to take pictures. Because of this many of my pictures come blurry (once I click the button, I move but the camera is not done taking the picture).
Does anyone has this problem and solution to this?
Thanks
RS

I purchased the x5 slimline in February 2006. I used it for 2 weeks and the flash went out. I had to send it back and it took 3 MONTHS for me to receive my camera. It had to be replaced, not repaired. Something about they were on backorder and then they had a hold-up in customs. I know its not their fault, but it did upset me. They had the camera longer than i did.Customer service was great and had low hold times.

Re: Batteries. Never charge batteries unless they are totally depleted as this shortens their life span. Think of a battery as a memory chip - if the battery has 25% charge left when you recharge it. The next time you charge it will only charge 75% of it's cells - losing 25% of it's life.

Posted by Charlotte | July 30, 2006 7:20 PM
Ral - While your comment about charging batteries made sense in the NiCad world a few years ago, it's less relevant in the days of today's Lithium Ion batteries.
That doesn't mean it isn't true at all, it just means that they are much less likely to develop a memory than the NiCad batteries that we all know and love.

I purchased the Traveler from Aldi and have had an excellent experience.
However both batteries appear to have died on the same day.
I am about to purchase another battery see if the camera works, if not I will introduce the camera to the garbage.

I also have this Traveler camera from Aldi. I work for Aldi so I know we get really great electronics. If an item is 3 months old and hasn't sold we can mark it down which is why it was so cheap. I agree this is an awesome camera. I dropped mine when I first got it and called the company, they sent me a brand new one. Mine is a year and a half old with lots of use so I am running into the dead battery problem now. But I saw a link to order new ones so I will do that. We (Aldi) had a 8.0 this year but they sold like hotcakes. I know I love mine though

I bought the Traveler 6.3 mega pixel camera last year, from my local Aldi here in the UK.
Within 6 months the battery life was significantly reduced. Now both batteries have completely given up the ghost and will not recharge.
My father bought the same camera at the same time and has had exactly the same problem with the batteries.
I have found exact replacements at this site.
These batteries are the actual 3.7 v 1000 mAh , which seem to be difficult to track down.
There are many 3.7 v 900 mAh out there, but strictly speaking they are not the ones that are in the camera originally.

Slimline X5 from Aldi England in 2005 for £149.99p A great buy, wonderful pics, badly let down by the poor battery life.
I too am struggling to find where to purchase new battery.
Mine came with a 3.7 volt 650 mAh rating, what is the highest rating that can be purchased?
I use a one gigabyte SD card and download via a card reader, purchased from Aldi (also made by Traveler) using Microsoft Windows XP and it has been trouble free. I am now looking out for the 8.1 version.

When I dropped my camera and it was badly damaged, Traveler of Germany were very helpful and have a standard price to replace the bare camera for £80 + postage . Which I did.
My DC8600 is a wonderful camera and out performs most much dearer cameras. I wouldn't change it for anything else, since it is so easy to use with great results!

I have had my 5 MP Traveler for a little over a year and I really loved it but lately I have been getting very blurry pictures...even when I take a timed picture so I know it's not because I'm moving. On some pictures one person will be clear and another might be blurry. Very disappointing as I have been really pleased with the camera up until this time. It also seems to have a delay in taking the picture after it has focused. Battery life has always been pretty good for me just blurry shots lately.
Posted by Mary | December 29, 2007 12:40 AM
Hi Mary -
I would check the lens of the camera. I managed to get something on mine and it smeared really well, meaning every picture I took had a lovely smudge on it. If this is the case with you, find a soft cloth (like you would use for cleaning glasses) and gently clean it. Then you should be set.
If this isn't the case, then it might just be that the camera is dying. If it's out of warranty, then there may not be a lot that you can do. Sorry if that's the case!

Hi Kevin -
I now have the 8600, and change the mode all the time. Can't say if it hurts it, but it doesn't seem to cause any harm. Would be interesting to hear if anyone else has any opinions!

i bought 10.1 mega pixel dc-xzg digital camera from aldi in april of this year (2008). it worked great for awhile, i am traveling now and the camera is giving me serious problems - after a minute or less i cannot take any more picturs or they appear mono color. the camera gets really hot and colored bars start appearing on the screen, eventually the screen goes dark. i am told i need a new ctd (?) or something like that, which is not available anywhere.
does any one have a suggestion?

Chad,
I dropped my Vivicam 4000 recently and broke the LCD. You indicated that you also had dropped yours (DC-6300) and had to get a new one. I would be interested in buying your old DC-6300 for parts if the LCD is intact. I realize that your post was a couple years ago but thought I would give it a try since I really have enjoyed the camera and hate to scrap it.
Parts are not available through Traveler and with Vivitar in bankruptcy and now owned by Sakar, parts are not available there either.
Anyone ??
Thanks,
Kurt

Hi Kurt -
Unfortunately, someone else made me an offer a short while back, and I passed along the non-functioning camera, along with all the accessories that I had left, so I don't have anything to offer. So sorry!

hi all. Aldi's is at it again, this time w/ a 9mp Traveler 9900. it only has 3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom. but i could care less about the zoom. i'm impressed about the mp. it's DIRT cheap! any1 have one? how is it? complaints or suggestions?

I have their 8 MP camera that my husband insisted I buy a few years ago. That thing has been a dream! From these comments, I take it that they have been increasing in MP over the years.
Mine has never given me an ounce of trouble, and takes great images. I use the upper resolution range, and can mess with them in Photoshop.
Does anyone know what company makes the 8MP one? From your comments, it looks like they were make by different companies, as they increased in MPs?

Hi, greetings from Ireland,
Great to see so many ppl liking Aldi cameras.
Iv had mine since 2007, its a DV 5070, 5.0 megapixel the only problem is the charger cable for the battery pack has worn out basically the cables going into the charger jackplug have frayed and broken off!! I cannot charge the battery any longer and have missed the summer of taking photos and need to get a charger pack and battery for a festival coming up.
can anyone recommend where i could get a charger from? all I need is the cabel that fits into the docking port.
Any suggestions?

I have the Traveler DC 9900. I really like it, but my 2 year got ahold of the camera and started snapping pictures and now I have a memory error. I can't find anything on the internet on how to get rid of the memory error other than re-formatting the camera. I don't want to do that because there were two pictures that I need. Anyone have any ideas?

hi just to let you know that i have the 6300 mega pixel camera and this is my 3rd battery in a few years, this was purchased from Aldi in Melbourne I am shopping for a sd card 128 meg and finding it is difficult, any suggestions? please.

I would suggest using a larger card. We routinely use a 512MB MicroSD card (from a phone, with adapter), but have also used up to a 4GB card in the camera. No sense restricting yourself to the 128MB card.
