Don't Back Down

Testing for Popups »

Came across a cool little site that seems harmless that allows you to test your browser's ability to block popup ads. For reference, Firefox blocks all of them except for test #8 - the Drop Down Popup. Incidentally, I see that one all the time because my hometown paper users them. Dang! (From Tony)

Mapping with Google and Firefox »

By now, you've surely heard about Google Maps. This is a very cool mapping service, which easily blows away both Yahoo! Maps and Mapquest. As with most other services, it could always stand to be closer at hand. It seems that someone has created an extension for the Firefox search bar, which brings it closer. Personally, it's still too far away for my taste.

Instead, I went to the Google Maps site and right-clicked on the search box, choosing to add a keyword for this search (creatively, I call mine "map"). Now, I simply select the address bar and type in map 28212 (for instance) and it takes me there. Very quick. Very close-at-hand. I love it.

Incidentally, if you use Firefox and are having trouble getting the map to display, make sure you go to Tools > Options > Web Features > Javascript Advanced and make sure Change Images is checked. Google Maps won't work if it isn't.

Outlook Error 0x80040600 »

I just ran into this bizarre error in Outlook, that told me absolutely nothing - the detail says Unknown Error (it also refers to a messaging interface). This particular beauty came up while sending and receiving while I was trying it - may have occurred at other times as well. Somewhat surprisingly, I found the answer quickly - at Microsoft! I did actually search at Google - but the answer was on a Microsoft page. I went back and searched using MSN Search and it also came up with this KB article as the first result. Promising!

My First Spam Harvester »

I'm so excited! I caught my very first spam harvester on Thursday! Interested? Read all about them. Want to try and catch your very own? You can read about that too! I really have no idea if Project Honeypot will work, but I think it's quite an interesting concept. I'm going to do some digging through my logs later, see if I can find out if anyone else is hitting my honepot, and just hasn't been caught yet.

Back in the Saddle »

If I haven't responded to your email or IM in the last few days, please be patient - I've been out of the country. I think I'm mostly caught up on what's come in, now I have to get on with responding to all of that. Shouldn't be long now. Thanks for your patience.
