Don't Back Down

So I'm trying to look into some hosting options. My current host, Total Choice Hosting, does a reasonable job, has a decent plan, but their support is lacking. They have the technology, they just don't have the attitude. Or rather, they do have the attitude. It's quite common for me to submit a request, at which point I'm informed that the support desk doesn't support that sort of thing. Since I know they do, I ask for the ticket to be escalated, at which point I'm told that, after reviewing the ticket, they have decided to escalate it. Then I start over with the level 2 tech, and eventually it seems to get ironed out.

It shouldn't be that hard. I appreciate that maybe they have had a bad day. But this has happened more than once. Maybe this person just doesn't know what they are doing. I don't know. So I'm looking.

I looked at Hosting Matters and I have to say that I like their offerings, and their responses have been excellent. The only problem is that the resources included are, well, tiny. You're expected to buy other plans to resell, which in itself isn't a big deal, but it increases the complexity. So I kept looking.

I checked out TekTonic because of Peter's comments about his migration. I have to say that their services seem good, though I don't know if I'm ready for a VPS (I'd sure like one though). Their response time has been excellent, though I do realize that's just sales, so it may change. So they're still in the running.

The other site, that I really really wanted to like, is Site5. Their response time was decent, but not great. Still, I can live with that, as long as they are competent. So I asked some questions. One of the questions had to do with secure POP3 access. The sales rep told me (and I'm quoting here): "Unfortunately they've written their own POP daemon that does not yet support SSL or similar." This is the reason they don't support it. Because the provider of their software doesn't. Fair enough, but it didn't make sense to me. So I checked.

Sure thing, the software vendor supports it. So I asked again, and this time received a completely different response (from the same person): "The...implantation of SSL is cumbersome & pathetic to say the least--hence the reason why we do not advertise it and do not support it." To begin with, I'm not sure that I want to have it implanted. But that's really another issue. The more important one is that he flat-out told me they didn't have it, then backed up and decided to change his story. I understand that this may be a sales guy, but come on - to flat out lie, in an arena when you can easily be caught? That's just wrong and I won't put up with that sort of thing. Looks like Site5 is out of the running.

So at the moment, TekTonic is looking like the front-runner. Anyone else have any suggestions? Please keep them somewhat useful - rather than saying "This host rocks!" or "They blow!", give me something. Tell me why you like them (or dislike them), as well as some idea of the experience(s) you've had and how long you've been with them.

Update: TekTonic doesn't appear to offer private-label name servers (ie, ns1.cxliv.org), so they're moved back a notch for the time being. I've also gone back to checking another provider that I had somewhat dismissed earlier, HostGator. I like, though perhaps won't use, the telephone support. And their response time (as well as their responses) have thus far been excellent. I'll keep you posted.

Update: As directed by Peter, I contacted the support department at Site5 directly, rather than depending on the salesperson. I've worked with salespeople, and while there are surely some decent ones, I hate it when they are incompetent and lie to try and cover their tracks. Still, the features are there, so I guess that puts them back in the race.

Update: I'm currently leaning towards HostGator, but I also responded privately to Bill's comment, so we'll see where that leads as well. I think it's safe to say that a VDS/VPS is safely off the table for the moment, as I just don't think that I have the admin skills to handle it. Reseller account (somewhere), here I come!

Finally: I made some more inquiries with both Site5 and Tektonic. While I liked Tektonic, the answers were good, the response was fast, I just didn't have the same feeling with them. Can't explain it really. Perhaps because they are the new(er) kid on the block. So I went with Site5. Account is up now (amazingly fast), waiting on the name servers to propagate before doing much more. The specs at Dreamhost are really impressive - but almost too much so. Makes me wonder if they can really support those numbers. Should be interesting to see.

Footnote: And TCH? I wrote Bill almost immediately after his comment (now 24 hours ago). Haven't heard a peep. This is the sort of thing that turned me off of TCH - you want to talk, let's talk. Instead, it seems more and more like they are all talk and nothing more. Interestingly, a couple of questions I submitted this afternoon to help with the name server switch were answered incredibly fast, which was nice. So who knows the story? I sure don't. I just figured I didn't want to be wondering when I was providing to others, you know? I'll keep you updated on Site5. Thanks for the comments.

I use CPHosting. I've gotten good support from them, although I've rarely needed it. I have had some outage when they changed my site to a new server, but they warned me well ahead of time. For the most part they've been as they should be, invisible. I guess I'd rate them a B+.

I have been using them for over two years. They host both my personal site, and my Toastmasters site.

I picked them for price.

I don't understand why you're asking Site5's sales department technical questions in the first place. They're not lying to you, they just have no idea what they're talking about. Sometimes sales people get overzealous in what they think they know about the technical side, and rather than go and talk to the tech support folks to confirm their answer, they try to handle it themselves based on what they think they know. Usually in this situation, they end up talking out of their butts. Really, their tech support people are quite competent and I don't think you should judge them on the basis of what their sales people think they know.

Try emailing your question to shared@site5.com, I'm sure you'll get a much better response.

If you would like to contact me directly I would be more than happy to see your support issues thru to the conclusion that makes sense.

I am sorry you find our support lacking and if you could email the details of your problem, rest assured I will get to the bottom of it and correct any defecinecys in our support team.

If you choose not to work with us, then I wish you the best of luck in finding just the right provider.

I use dreamhost, and am much impressed with the support I have received.

When I was hit with an early version of the phpBB exploit (before the Sanity worm), I filled out a contact form and got assistance back via email literally within minutes. They also followed up with me until I was satisfied that I had fixed my site. Bear in mind this was for 3rd party software that I had installed.

Very nice people and the right kind of attitude in my experience.

Anyway, just offering up another option.

I've been researching the same question, and have pretty well decided on Dreamhost as well. They have excellent user forums, with a multitude of posts on setting up a wide range of apps on their specific configuration, which I'll find useful.

Mainly though, it's their plan. For $16 month (2 yr pre-pay, guaranteed never to go up) you get great space & bandwidth, unlimited SQL databases & all the goodies, plus the ability to host 15 full domains - that was the kicker for me.

Sign up before end of December & get triple storage and bandwidth for as long as you host with them.

oh, and if you're gonna use 'em, let me supply you a referral link? Or see if Jason above has one, since he suggested them first.

Good luck finding a great solution. (And thanks for all your work on MTApproval!)

I've been ecstatic with Hosting Matters, myself. The service is truly faboo.

But, then, what do I know -- I liked your old templates better, too. :-)

I actually liked the Hosting Matters offering, and their responses were quick, and everything I read was promising. But their reseller account is limited - 500MB of space, 19GB of transfer, 4 MySQL databases, 60 POP3 addresses, 10 subdomains. Then I have to buy additional accounts on top of that to resell.

At Site5 (for an example), for the same price ($20), you get 4GB of storage, 60GB of bandwidth, and unlimited everything else (unlimited by design - naturally limited by account resources). Plus no extra accounts to buy. If it fills up, I just upgrade to a larger reseller plan.

Sorry about the templates, tho. :)

Chad,

I use Arias Web Hosting.

I've been with them for a few years now and am very satisfied.

They offer different packages and will design one for you. I'd suggest you contact Scott directly at sales@ariaswebhosting.com. Direct your email to him and tell him I sent you. Great guy and very workable. He does both the sales and tech support. Can answer your questions. Very workable.

Hi Reb - Thanks for the link. His plans do seem to be relatively full-featured, but the limits are a bit low for my needs. For instance, for the price of his highest plan (actually $1 more at Site5), I get roughly ten times the storage and five times the bandwidth. May not be necessary for many accounts (yours included), but for reselling, it'll make a big difference.

Another thing to note is that he doesn't appear to offer reseller accounts. This might be because you are allowed to resell off of your regular accounts, but that generally isn't the case.

I have to say that as a 9 month customer of total choice hosting, I've been very disappointed. Mostly in the level of service, but also in a few occasions with their technology. Most recently, they suspended my account because they said I hadn't paid. My re-seller account was set up for auto-pay until one day I get an e-mail saying I need to re-enter my billing information. I asked what happened and they wouldn't comment but just kept e-mailing me to re-enter my billing info. I figured maybe they lost my info or something weird happened. I did check with my credit card company just to make sure that they didn't do anything but they said all was fine. So I did re-enter my cc info at total choice hosting and got a reciept confirming payment and that I was set up for monthly auto-pay. Seven days later, I go to my website and there's a large display that reads "ACCOUNT SUSPENDED" and to contact accounting. Anyone that has customers relying on your website would understand my frustration at this step. To make things worse, their billing person tells me that "I was told my options and that until I paid, it would not be turned on." This was 11:00 at night and I wasn't in a place that I could re-enter my credit card info. I asked him to turn on the account and I would address the issue in the morning and he refused. He went on to complain (in his e-mail) about his long work hours saying he'd been working 7 hours over his shift and that if I didn't pay in 15 minutes i would have to wait until morning. So I'm running ad campaigns promoting my site and people are going there and seeing "Account Suspended" I was livid that they wouldn't turn it on until morning. I lost all respect for the company. What awful customer service. In the morning, I re-entered my credit card info and got yet another e-mail saying that they had charged my card and that I was set up for auto-payment. My account is still not active and I've now authorized them on three seperate occasions to charge my card monthly and automatically. Thanks totalchoicehosting.com -- you really understand business.

I've been with Total Choice Hosting now for over 4 years. When we started, their service was second to none -- the main reason I went there. I now have 3 reseller accounts with about 60 hosted clients, and several regular hosting accounts. I can say that like any company, with exponential growth, comes exponential problems -- adjustments needed. I also feel that TCH support has gone downhill in a hurry, but I can say that Bill Kish is ALWAYS ready and willing to get to the botom of it. I am going to stick with them and hope this is just a growing pain period and hopefully they will make those adjustments. I have many complaints about them, and i see so many ways they can improve their customer's exprience. But all in all, you can't beat their pricing, and their business model is impressive. Yes, their low level techs are mediocre at best, but even with their current level of service, it beats every other host I've ever been with. When you get to know the techs on a first name basis, and you know which ones need to be slapped awake, you also learn which ones get things done and so far none of the problems have been too frustrating. Good hosts are hard to come by, TCH was a Fantastic host, and now a Good host. Hoepfully soon they'll get the support ironed out and return to the days of glory -- speedy, intelligent service.
