Don't Back Down

Categorically Speaking »

I'm really beginning to hate categories. Don't get me wrong - I love the organization that they offer, and the ability to focus on a particular topic. But filing them in that way is tough. You've seen my various comments about new categories over the last year and a half or so. In case you hadn't guessed already, that means there is a new category. Actually, there are two. The first is a new top-level category, while the other is a new sub-category under that one.

I started by adding the new category Software. Much like the recent announcement of Televizzle, I discovered that I had been talking about things that just didn't fit. Generally crammed into either Code Talking or Linkedelica, they just didn't work for me. I try to keep general links in the latter, and the former I try to reserve specifically for things related to programming. This was somewhere in-between, so I created a generic software category to hold things.

Well, as I was figuring out what to do with the category, I noticed that I already had loads of software to talk about (much of it my own). I also had a number of posts on Microsoft that I wanted to better categorize. I first created the Microsoft category, which received a number of entries. Then I moved both the Movable Type and Mozilla categories into the Software category. Everything is nice and organized.

Except when I did that, I broke some of the paths that I had configured. At this point, I think I've dealt with all of them except for Movable Type and Mozilla. Everything under those two ought to display just fine, but not those. I'll be working on them shortly, and should have them up and running before too long. Sorry for any inconvenience.

If you are using a link directly to a sub-category (/movable_type/notifier/), you really ought to change it to just use the final sub-category name (/notifier/). I think I've addressed all instances of the former, but it'll be easier if you use the latter on a regular basis. Thanks.
