Don't Back Down

Version Three »

I finally took the plunge and installed Movable Type version 3 on the site. I've been toying with it since the early alpha, but didn't have the motivation to really get it installed and working until now. Why now? That's a very interesting question.

The answer is that I just don't know. It probably doesn't have anything to do with the recent clarifications to the licensing that caused such a furor over the last few days (and no, I'm not going to link to that mess). Truth be told, it is probably more to do with the contest than anything else. The new plugin architecture looks cool, and at least for the next month or so, I think I'll be trying it out.

It also seems to me that MT-Notifier can benefit greatly from the new design. I may even have some other ideas - both for my existing plugins and for some new ones. Not to mention that the new licensing allows me to perform consulting services for MT 3.0 and collect a fee. Which I'm happy to do, in case you're interested. Just let me know.

In the meantime, I better figure out how it works. So here I am.

Update: Things are generally good. I would suggest making a backup of your old system if it all possible. I simply created a new database, and ran an import from a saved export from the other database. Then I put the new version into a new directory all its own. Everything pretty much worked well from there.

I would recommend a couple of things: Install your old plugins. Even if they might not work, you may have problems building if some functionality you used to use suddenly disappears. For me, this was three versions of a single post, as it was apparently saved in the database, but the rebuilds got hung up on errors. Also if you use new directories, rebuild your entire site. I didn't and ended up with new comments posted to the old database. Oops. Still pretty minor, and I think things are looking good now. Let me know if you run into anything.

Finally, I've noticed some quirkiness with Firefox (0.8), though it's not a big deal and I haven't done anything to track it down just yet. Definitely something to watch.
