Die-Hard Fans »

David Letterman apparently made a comment recently about Panthers fans - namely that there were no die-hard Panthers fans. Suddenly, the Charlotte area specifically, and likely the entire population of both Carolinas, is out to prove him wrong.

There was a pep rally in Charlotte yesterday, where thousands of people turned out to prove that David Letterman was wrong. Let's think about that for a moment, shall we?

I don't mean to insult the folks here in Charlotte, or Carolina Panthers fans anywhere. But really - arguing that thousands of people showing up for a pep rally a week before the team participates in the Super Bowl isn't really useful.

Show me the fans that show up for a pep rally after the teams loses 15 games in a year. What's that? You can't find any? Wouldn't really surprise me much. The stadium formerly known as Ericsson was half empty - or more - for much of the season when the Panthers took their slide. If the fans are such die-hards, where were they then?

The fans now are, quite simply, jumping on the bandwagon. It's cool to be a fan at this point. While it's true that those people may turn into die-hard fans down the road, it's probably not the best argument to make at this point. Let's just enjoy the ride, laugh at Dave's jokes and let it go. We can revisit the issue in a few years and see how things look then.
