Beginning yesterday, every family dwelling in Mecklenburg County is required by law to have a functioning carbon monoxide detector. Whatever happened to personal responsibility?
There are certainly arguments to be made for places like apartments or condominiums or townhomes, where the actions of one resident can potentially affect many others. But why is it that every argument must end up with government legislation for everyone? Why not encourage developers of multifamily units such as these to include such devices, rather than legislating us to death?
Why in the world would anyone think it's a good idea to fine people because they make a choice not to do something for their own safety? Having a carbon monoxide detector may be an excellent decision for everyone. But it's high time the government stopped feeling like they were the ones to make those decisions for us.
