Don't Back Down

Identity on the Internet »

It still surprises me that so few people take advantage of an increasingly valuable (and increasingly inexpensive) resource - the Internet! Out of 8 candidates for at-large seats on the Charlotte City Council, only 3 have web sites.

While all of the candidates in the 2003 election appear to have email addresses, when I'm sending email, I like to have some idea of the recipient rather than trying to interpret that "nu88" means "Fran Perez" or "71170.3036" means "Nancy Carter" or "cdlc" means "Rachel Hall".

This isn't specific to politicians (or potential politicians) - they are just a convenient illustration of the issue. I don't understand why this is so difficult a concept to grasp when so many no-cost or low-cost solutions exist for email. Even your own domain doesn't cost much and then you get both a web site and email!
