Ahoy Mateys! »

That's right, we're finally there. Today is Interntional Talk Like a Pirate Day. We've waited all year for this, and finally the glorious appearing is upon us. Don't forget - this is the only chance you'll have for a year. Okay, you can talk like a pirate anytime. But this is the only day where it's official that you ought to talk like a pirate. Arr!

Enhancing Category Tags »

I recently stumbled across David Raynes' excellent SubCategories plugin. This piece of software allows you to define existing categories as parents and children of one another.

For instance, I have a Movable Type category. This category has been defined as a parent of my SomeDays and ModCheck categories.

Will Sprint Blow It Again? »

First, there was the Kyocera 7135. Okay, I'm sure it wasn't the absolute first example, but it was the first that affected me. I've since had the chance to use one for a little while, and very much enjoyed it. The phone seemed to work well. But it was never released by Sprint PCS.

Next, there came the SonyEricsson T608. This phone isn't a smartphone, exactly, but it does offer Java applications, and it has built-in Bluetooth. So it would work. In fact, the idea of having a phone with Bluetooth and a Palm-type device (also with Bluetooth) was appealing. When it's time to upgrade the Palm, upgrade the Palm, but keep the phone. I could see it. Still, this one hasn't been released. No telling if it ever will be released.

Finally, enter the Handspring Treo 600. This is one sweet combination. The size of the smartphone has actually been reduced to near that of a standard phone. Yet still the larger screen with the Palm OS embedded in the unit. All in one sleek package. Unfortunately, the date keeps slipping. Even Orange has announced their version of the phone, to be available in about a month. They have also included a wireless backup utility. Very cool phone, very cool feature. Sprint's edition? While still being mentioned frequently, it's nowhere to be seen.

Out with it Sprint - are we geeks bound to be disappointed again? Is it time to start counting down to number portability instead of trying to figure out when the next smartphone will actually be released?

Charlotte has a Weak Mayor »

Let me say that again: Charlotte. Has. A. Weak. Mayor.

When I say that, it's not intended as an insult against Pat McCrory. It's a fact. Charlotte is a city that makes use of a weak mayor. This means that the mayor doesn't run the day-to-day tasks of the city. That's a job for the city manager, a position appointed by city council. And speaking of the council: Except in rare occasions of a tie vote among the members (and a few other minor areas), the mayor has no vote whatsoever.

Human Condition »

This morning, I read about a kid who beat a puppy to death with a board. Why? He said that it felt good. It felt good? To beat a puppy? Until it died? Where do we find these people? I don't care how much you dislike something - to beat it to death with a board simply because you don't care for it is wrong. I don't particularly care for cats, but I'm not going to beat one.

MT-SomeDays 2.2.0 »

We found a problem with selecting data from a Berkeley DB system, so I added some code to double-check the entry data before writing it out. This seems to be working, but please let me know if you still see problems. No tags changed this time.

MT-SomeDays 2.1.0 »

After a minor issue with a shell rebuild script and my mind continuing to spin overnight, it turns out it's time for yet another update to MT-SomeDays.

This should be the last for a while, because I am flat out of ideas. One note about this new version. The daily conditional tags (<MTSDIfSunday>) have been shortened to the first three characters of the name (<MTSDIfSun>). I hope this doesn't cause you too much trouble.

Hurricane Info »

It's looking more and more like Hurricane Isabel is going to make landfall somewhere along the Eastern Seaboard. But where? As much as I hate saying so, it seems that the government has one of the more useful sites that I've found to track storms. Currently it looks like landfall will be somewhere in the neighborhood of Pamlico Sound, NC.

The StormTrack system is pretty cool too. Their animated storm movement map is very nice. Would be better if it included times and dates, as well as the currently forecast path of the storm, but it's still a great resource.

Finally, the Weather Underground has a well-organized tropical storm section, offering several different maps - from a historical map that tracks similar storms at this location and time of year to a 5-day forecast map and a cool satellite map with land overlays.

Of course, landfall is still at least 4 days away - so who knows where she might end up?

MT-SomeDays 2.0.0 »

After receiving some feedback, I did some rewriting of the MTSomeDays plugin.

As the changes were somewhat extensive, and because the use of the attributes has changed slightly, I bumped the version number up to 2.0.0. I hope this doesn't break anyone's system.
