Don't Back Down

In the race for those who would be mayor, Pat McCrory held on to get the Republican nomination by a pretty significant margin. For the Democrats, Craig Madans soundly thumped Leonard "Preacher Man" Harris. This means Madans will meet McCrory in November to see who will lead Charlotte for the next two years.

In the City Council district 1 primary for the Democrats, Patsy Kinsey performed well against Ken Davies, and Ms. Kinsey will replace the retiring Sara Spencer in November as there are no other contenders on the ballot.

Meanwhile, in the district 3 runoff (also Democrat), Warren F. Turner had a bit more trouble defeating J. W. Walton, but still held on in the end, and will replace Harold Cogdell following the November election, as the winner of the primary again faces no competition come November.

In the Republican primary for district 5, Frank Burns (presumably not the one from M*A*S*H) took it to Al Molnar by an impressive margin. As a reward, Mr. Burns gets to meet incumbent Democrat Nancy Carter in a brawl to end it all for the district 5 seat come November.

Finally, we come to the at-large seats on the council. The Republican party fielded an impressive five candidates for this year's primary, but they are competing for just four seats. This means that someone will be left out in the cold. Newcomers Paul Eich, John W. Lassiter and Fran Perez will join incumbent Pat Mumford on the November ballot to go up against the contenders from the other parties. This means you-know-who didn't make the cut. Sorry, Lynn, but it seems the people have spoken.

Congratulations are in order for Patsy Kinsey and Warren F. Turner on their newly won council seats. Best of luck to all the contenders come November, and finally a hearty goodbye to long time council presence Lynn Wheeler.
