First, there was the Kyocera 7135. Okay, I'm sure it wasn't the absolute first example, but it was the first that affected me. I've since had the chance to use one for a little while, and very much enjoyed it. The phone seemed to work well. But it was never released by Sprint PCS.
Next, there came the SonyEricsson T608. This phone isn't a smartphone, exactly, but it does offer Java applications, and it has built-in Bluetooth. So it would work. In fact, the idea of having a phone with Bluetooth and a Palm-type device (also with Bluetooth) was appealing. When it's time to upgrade the Palm, upgrade the Palm, but keep the phone. I could see it. Still, this one hasn't been released. No telling if it ever will be released.
Finally, enter the Handspring Treo 600. This is one sweet combination. The size of the smartphone has actually been reduced to near that of a standard phone. Yet still the larger screen with the Palm OS embedded in the unit. All in one sleek package. Unfortunately, the date keeps slipping. Even Orange has announced their version of the phone, to be available in about a month. They have also included a wireless backup utility. Very cool phone, very cool feature. Sprint's edition? While still being mentioned frequently, it's nowhere to be seen.
Out with it Sprint - are we geeks bound to be disappointed again? Is it time to start counting down to number portability instead of trying to figure out when the next smartphone will actually be released?
