Nominating Nota »

It looks like the NameFinalVote was, in fact, not final. Turns out that there were far too many votes for None of the Above to flat-out ignore. With that in mind, here's my new nomination: Nota.

Nota means "note" in Portugeuse. Nota Bene (Latin) indicates that special attention should be paid to something. Both are appropriate in describing a feed, or a portion of pretty much any data. Since several people have been concerned with making sure this format is not specifically used to replace RSS, Nota could mean Not A feed, or Not Another feed, or pretty much Not Anything. For those who like acronyms, Nota could stand for None Of The Above, especially relevant here.

- Usable and Short? Definitely.

- Acronym? Not necessarily.

- Unique and Memorable? I think so.

- General? Absolutely. You can take notes on just about anything.

- Multicultural? Certainly.

- Legal Strength? Solid. USPTO doesn't seem to have anything on Nota. Copyright search turns up only music, but for one exception - "Nota - a nodal thermal analysis program", apparently registered to RCA in 1982. Google search didn't turn up anything on this program. Nota.org is taken, by a site dedicated to enacting None of the Above as a ballot option, to reject all candidates and call for a new election. Again quite relevant here. Nota.com is also taken and resolves to a personal dance video site (?). Nota.net is registered but does not seem to resolve. Purl.org/nota does not seem to be taken, perhaps that could be used to redirect elsewhere.

- Quirkiness and Substance? Yes and Yes.

- Clear Pronunciation? Generally. Not-A or Not-Ah might be used in place of Note-Ah, but neither is particularly bad.

- Usable as Noun and Verb? Without a doubt. My site is Notable. I've been Notarized. Grab a Notation of this work.

I've even got some buttons ready.

Finally, Nota is also very close to Atom spelled backwards. Mota, the actual backwards spelling of Atom, perhaps should be considered as an alternate if you don't like Nota (I haven't checked the status of Mota). It also evokes thoughts of "mote", which is typically defined as a small particle, again a rather relevant name.

If you've got an idea for a project name, add it to the wiki - and don't forget to Blog the Nomination!
